Australia uses progressive marginal rates. Each rate applies only to the portion of income inside that bracket — moving into a higher bracket never reduces your after-tax income. Your marginal rate is 30%.
| Bracket | Rate | Income taxed | Tax |

What this includes: income tax at resident rates, the Medicare levy including the low-income reduction, the low income tax offset, and credit for PAYG tax withheld.
What this excludes: HELP, HECS and other study loan repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, private health insurance rebate, foreign resident and working holiday maker rates, PAYG instalments, and all other offsets and levies. It assumes you were an Australian resident for tax purposes for the full year and entitled to the full tax-free threshold.
This is an estimate only. It provides general information and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation or individual circumstances, and does not constitute personal tax, accounting, legal or financial advice. Figures are rounded. A study loan balance in particular can change the result significantly. Please confirm your position with us or another registered adviser before acting.
Think your refund should be higher?
A calculator handles the brackets. Working out everything you are entitled to claim is where the real difference is made.
